Kizhi is a technique used in the treatment of various pain-related conditions musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. Kizhi is used in Kalari Chikitsa Ayurvedic treatment. It is often combined with massage to increase the pain relief benefits.
Kizhi means poultice in Malayalam (the language of Kerala in southern India). In Sanskrit it is known as Pinda Sweda. The warmth of the compresses in combination with the active ingredients of herbs and oils, improves blood circulation and reduces body stiffness and pain.

This Kizhi is a specialty of Kalari Chikitsa and is a part of Kalari Marma massage. As Kalari Chikitsa was developed to prevent and treat war injuries in which this Kizhi is useful modern sports injuries.
The herbal ingredients in Kizhi are made from secret recipes passed down through generation from master to student. As with herbal medicines and oils made in Kalari Chikitsa, each Kalari line has its own recipes.
The main ingredient of this Kizhi is Navara rice which is harvested in 60 days and used exclusively for treatment in Ayurveda. The rice is cooked in a mixture of cow's milk and herbs decoctions and tied into a poultice. The compress is soaked in warm milk and herbal decoctions throughout the treatment. The ingredients rejuvenate and nourish the body.
This Kizhi contains fresh leaves of medicinal plants that are fried with other herbal ingredients. Kizhi is then dipped in warm herbal oil and applied to the affected body parts.
